Melanie Kirby will present Bees As Seeds, which will discuss a little about bee genetics, bee breeding, global bee breeding efforts and about her current work.
Melanie Kirby began beekeeping as a US Peace Corps volunteer in the late 90s and has since had the blessed opportunities to work with bees and their keepers around the nation and globe. She co-founded Zia Queenbees Farm and Field Institute in the southern Rocky Mountains which specializes in selection of the heritable trait of longevity bee breeding. She is also a writer and has written numerous articles that have been published in the American Bee Journal, Bee Culture, 2 Million Blossoms, Green Fire Times and was a 2019-2020 Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellow. She recently completed her MSc. in Entomology from Washington State University and currently works as the Extension Educator at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
